This Mercator Advisory Group special report was developed by Mercator as part of a research partnership with the Merchant Risk Council. This special collaboration was created to explore the evolution of authentication in e-commerce and card-not-present transactions. Our partnership initiated a significant research initiative intended to assist all participants in the global commerce value chain by educating the industry at-large on the emerging digital identity ecosystem and its relationship to existing fraud management approaches, business relationships and potential government regulation. With the MRC’s endorsement and support, Mercator began a four-month primary research effort to understand the online identity challenge. Our findings and recommendations for the future are the subject of this special report.
